The bulky black pickup slid in behind Kyle’s truck, and a crop of dark hair emerged, followed by a set of broad shoulders. Ethan. Figured. Only someone with a death wish would pit themselves against him and my brother together. Probably the reason Nate had chosen him to send.

“You have got to be the jammiest bastard on earth,” he said, as he rounded the truck toward us.

I grinned. “Not jammy. I just had a decent defence.”

I’d ended up speaking to Nate myself on the phone. While he hadn’t been too convinced that I should get my own way, he couldn’t argue the case I’d thrown at him. That damage control needed to be applied. The police had been to the bar to check out that piece of my story. Chances were, they’d talked to more than just the staff, and that’d bring a whole lot more attention than we liked. So, after I’d assured him that getting one person to believe I was innocent would start the ball of doubt rolling through the lot of them, he’d reluctantly given in and told me I could go. Though, not before he’d warned me to keep Kyle in my sights at all times. Or else.

“Still jammy,” Ethan said. “You need me to run through the rules?”

“No, I don’t need you to run through any rules.” My fingertips dug into my hips, where my hands rested. “I know I’m not allowed to lose you. I know I’m not allowed to run off and disappear. I know.”

“Good.” He jerked his chin up. “Your phone switched on?”

I winced. “About that … my phone’s flat.”

They both just stared at me. Then at each other, before Ethan held out his hand.

“Switch with me.”

“What’ll you use?”

He prodded over his shoulder with his thumb. “There’s a charger in the truck, so I’ll just charge yours up. You can call Kyle, if need be, while it’s charging.”

I handed over the dead mobile, waiting as he worked out his own.

“Try not to fall over and land with your mouth wrapped around any drugs,” he said, slapping it into my palm. “And don’t get yourself arrested.”

“I wasn’t arrested. Just questioned. It’s not the same thing.”

“Semantics.” He poked a finger into my chest. “Do not fuck this up, Danny. You go off the rails again and make me or your brother look like a dick, I’m going to beat the shit out of you.”

“And I’ll clap while he’s doing it,” Kyle said.

I believed them. “I won’t fuck up,” I said.

Ethan smiled. I hated that smile. It only showed up when he knew his threat had been well and truly received. “Good.”

Two minutes later, they’d climbed into Ethan’s truck, and I’d shut myself inside Kyle’s. Their beady eyes narrowed on me when I checked the rear-view mirror. Like they knew a part of me really wanted to slam the pickup into gear and spin away as fast as I could. Instead, I made a big show of slowly fastening my seatbelt, getting myself comfortable, before lowering my gaze to the time on the dashboard clock.
